Jamia Millia Islamia

Founded in 1920 by a group of nationalist leaders and scholars in Aligarh, Jamia Millia Islamia emerged from India’s anti-colonial and reformist movements as an institution that combined modern education with a spirit of national service. It was initially established in Aligarh (United Provinces) and later shifted to Delhi in 1925, first in Karol Bagh, and then moved to its present campus in Okhla in 1935. The university became a Central University by an Act of Parliament in 1988 and has since evolved into a comprehensive, research-intensive institution with ten faculties, forty-four departments, and thirty centres offering programmes from school to doctoral levels. The university strives to blend traditional values with contemporary aspirations, promoting pluralism, inclusivity, and social responsibility. JMI continues to be recognised globally for its academic excellence and diversity, and is ranked in the QS World University Rankings 2026 band of 761–770.

Aligarh Muslim University

Aligarh Muslim University traces its origin to the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College, founded in 1875 by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan with the vision of uplifting Indian Muslims through modern scientific education. The institution became AMU in 1920 and stands today as one of India’s most prestigious Central Universities. Spread over nearly 467 hectares in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, AMU offers more than 300 courses across a wide spectrum of disciplines in both traditional and modern branches of knowledge. It attracts students from all corners of India and from over 20 countries, fostering a truly cosmopolitan academic community. The university’s mission is to nurture intellectual excellence, moral integrity, and scientific temper, guided by the ideals of nation-building and social progress. In NIRF 2024, AMU was ranked 8th among Indian universities and 16th overall.

Jamia Hamdard University

Jamia Hamdard, located in New Delhi, carries forward the legacy of Hakim Abdul Hameed and the vision of his father, Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed, who established a small Unani clinic in 1906 that grew into a major centre for traditional medicine. In 1989, the institution was granted “Deemed-to-be University” status by the Government of India. Today, Jamia Hamdard is a premier multidisciplinary university offering programmes in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, engineering, management, law, humanities, and social sciences. It aims to integrate modern scientific research with traditional systems of knowledge, especially Unani medicine, and has built a strong reputation for excellence in health sciences education and research. The university’s vision emphasises compassion, innovation, and international standards in education and healthcare.

Maulana Azad National Urdu University

Maulana Azad National Urdu University was established in 1998 by an Act of Parliament as a Central University with its headquarters in Gachibowli, Hyderabad. Dedicated to promoting the Urdu language and culture, MANUU’s central mission is to provide higher, vocational, and technical education through Urdu as the medium of instruction, ensuring access to quality learning for Urdu-speaking populations across India. The university operates both through its main campus and a vast network of regional centres and distance education programmes. It comprises several schools of study including Languages, Education, Social Sciences, Sciences, Journalism, and Computer Science. True to its namesake, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the university embodies the ideals of inclusivity, enlightenment, and empowerment through education.

Aliah University

Aliah University, based in Kolkata, is one of the oldest centres of Islamic and modern learning in India, tracing its lineage to the Calcutta Madrasah established in 1780 by Warren Hastings. Reconstituted under the Aliah University Act of 2007, it began functioning as a full-fledged university from the academic session 2008–09. It operates under the Department of Minority Affairs and Madrasah Education, Government of West Bengal. Aliah University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in disciplines such as science, technology, arts, humanities, and theology. The institution aims to advance higher education among socially and educationally backward classes, particularly minorities, while maintaining a spirit of inclusivity and inter-faith harmony. Rooted in its historic legacy yet focused on innovation, Aliah University continues to serve as a bridge between tradition and modernity in higher education.

University of Mumbai

The University of Mumbai, formerly known as the University of Bombay, was established on July 18, 1857 as one of the first three universities in India. Over the years, the University of Mumbai grew into a major federal university, governing numerous affiliated colleges and postgraduate institutions throughout the metropolitan region. In 1996, following the city’s official name change, the institution was renamed University of Mumbai. Today, it flourishes as a premier multidisciplinary university encompassing science, technology, arts, humanities, commerce, law, and medicine, with several campuses including Fort, Kalina, Thane, and Ratnagiri. The university holds a legacy of academic excellence, social inclusion, and pioneering educational reforms, being the first in India to admit women to all degrees in 1883 and boasting a library within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Rajabai Clock Tower complex.
