University of Mumbai
The University of Mumbai, formerly known as the University of Bombay, was established on July 18, 1857 as one of the first three universities in India. Over the years, the University of Mumbai grew into a major federal university, governing numerous affiliated colleges and postgraduate institutions throughout the metropolitan region. In 1996, following the city’s official name change, the institution was renamed University of Mumbai. Today, it flourishes as a premier multidisciplinary university encompassing science, technology, arts, humanities, commerce, law, and medicine, with several campuses including Fort, Kalina, Thane, and Ratnagiri. The university holds a legacy of academic excellence, social inclusion, and pioneering educational reforms, being the first in India to admit women to all degrees in 1883 and boasting a library within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Rajabai Clock Tower complex.
